Rivarossi' Last J3a Hudson

Brought on by the need for ever faster and more powerful passenger locomotives, the 4-6-4 Hudson was the next logical evolution of the 4-6-2 Pacific. During the twilight of steam some of the more noteworthy Hudsons were the 10 NYC J3a' that were streamlined and found at the head of legendary limiteds like the Empire States Express and the 20th Century Limited, perhaps the most famous of them all.

Development of the New York Central's Hudsons culminated in the J-3a class, Nos. 5405-5444, delivered by Alco in 1937, followed by the ten streamlined Hudsons a year later. No. 5405, the first of the 40 non-streamlined locomotives, represents the class in this builder's photo; she remained in service until 1956.

As far as we are aware, the AHM/Rivarossi versions of the J3a Hudson are the only vintage Hudsons which modeled the signature Booster Drive on the trailing truck.
