Mantua 351-100 Weyerhaeuser 2-6-6-2 Articulated Pannier Tank Mallet Locomotive

Legendary Mantua 2-6-6-2 Articulated Tender and non-tender Pannier Tank Mallet Locomotives were wonderful examples of the massive Mallet (pronounced Ma-lay) freight locomotives produced primarily in the US during the first decade of the 20th Century. Invented by Swiss engineer Anatole Mallet, the design which bears his name incorporated both articulation and compound steam use. The rear six fixed drive wheels were driven by a smaller high pressure boiler which then passed steam to a larger low pressure boiler driving the articulated front six drivers. The advantages of this configuration created far superior tractive force at less cost than the "double-headed" 2-8-0s commonly used for heavy freight service at the time. This, combined with the ability to negotiate tighter turns and steeper grades, popularized Mallets in the mountainous regions of the east and west and with logging and heavy ore hauling companies in the same regions.

The first American Mallet was an 0-6-6-0 built by Alco for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1903. It was soon followed by Baldwin examples and then steadily heavier and more powerful versions. The largest compound Mallets were ten 2-10-10-2s built for the Virginian by Alco in 1918.

This incredible MRRHQ Collectible HO Scale Mantua 351-100 Weyerhaeuser 2-6-6-2 Articulated Pannier Tank Mallet Locomotive was offered for one year only in 1999.
