Mantua 323-27 Lehigh Valley 4-6-2 Pacific Camelback Locomotive HO Scale

Mantua's first Camelback, the legendary and lovable Mantua 0-4-0 "Yard Goat" chugged it's way in kit form into model railroading history in 1939. After several sabbaticals and reissues it was still being reproduced until Mantua's demise and is the best selling 0-4-0 in model railroad history. Mantua's crowning Camelback creations, however, were their limited edition Pacific and Atlantic versions. Available for one year only in 1981, this MRRHQ Collectible HO Scale Mantua 323-27 Lehigh Valley 4-6-2 Pacific Camelback Locomotive is a pristine example of the type.

Camelback Locomotives, also known as Mother Hubbards, were a common sight on many rail lines from the 1890s to the demise of steam in the 1950s. Versatile and highly efficient they were built by Baldwin and many main line shops like the Erie and Reading in just about every common configuration from 0-4-0s to giant 0-8-8-0 articulateds and served in just about every capacity including yard, logging, freight and passenger service. The design was not without flaws. With the cab located over the valve gear accidents and even fatalities to the crew from broken rods occurred. This, along with the difficulty of communication between engineer and fireman would soon result in a ban on further Camelback production. The last known Camelback rolled out of the Reading shops in 1911.
