Mantua 314-22 NYC Class U-3a 0-8-0 Switcher #314
One of America's most popular and widely used steam locos was the creation of the U.S.R.A. program during World War I. The 175 original 0-8-0s became the standard for the type and, by 1953, over 1200 copies had been made. The larger boiler allowed the engine to do heavier work. They were used for switching as well as transfer service between yards.
The USRA allocated 75 0-8-0s to the New York Central System, and subsequent 0-8-0s built as late as 1944 were copies of the USRA design.
