Mantua 314-04 GN U.S.R.A. 0-8-0 Switcher

One of America's most popular and widely used steam locos was the creation of the U.S.R.A. program during World War I. The 175 original 0-8-0s became the standard for the type and, by 1953, over 1200 copies had been made. The larger boiler allowed the engine to do heavier work. They were used for switching as well as transfer service between yards.

The Great Northern Railroad received 4 of the original 175 U.S.R.A. 0-8-0 Switchers. Road numbers were 1179-1173. One can only wonder why Mantua chose Road Number 314 for this great model loco. Maybe it's because almost all of their 0-8-0 Switchers of the period had 314 model numbers. Or, maybe it's because the Internet didn't exist in 1978. Hmmm..........
