Mantua 312-61 Great Northern 2-8-2 Mikado Locomotive HO Scale

Now arriving on Track 1 at MRRHQ is some serious "Heavy Metal" from Mantua. Weighing in at 2 pounds, our NEW 2-8-0 Consolidations, 2-8-2 Mikados and 4-6-2 Pacifics feature heavy cast boilers for outstanding traction, smooth running valve gear and 12 wheel long haul tenders. Naturally, we have modified the stock "dummy" tender back-up light housing on all these heavy haulers with the MRRHQ Custom Directional lighting that these classic locomotives deserve.

Fully restored, reliable and powerful with plenty of space to add DCC or DCC/Sound, the remarkable Mantua Mikados are a must have for any working railroad or collection.

"Mikado" is the name generally assigned to the steam locomotives of the 2-8-2 wheel arrangement. The general, and reasonable assumption, is that the name "Mikado" stems from the early construction of locomotives of this wheel arrangement by Baldwin in 1893. These locomotives were of the three foot six inch gauge, and were constructed for Nihon Tetsudo (Japan Railways), a private railway at the time.

The 2-8-2 saw great success in the United States, mostly as a freight locomotive. It largely replaced the 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type as the heavy freight locomotive of choice in the second decade of the 20th century. Pulling power was similar to the best 2-8-0s, but a developing requirement for higher speed freight trains drove the shift to the 2-8-2. As locomotives continued to get larger, and faster, the Mikado was in turn pushed from the top-flight trains by larger freight locomotive configurations such as 2-10-2, 2-8-4, 2-10-4 and gigantic articulated locomotives. The "Mike" remained the most common road freight locomotive with most railroads until the end of steam in the 1950's. In excess of 14,000 of this type were built for North American service, which comprised approximately one-fifth of all locomotives in service at the time. Almost all North American railroads rostered the 2-8-2.
