IHCM629 Canadian National Class U-1-F 4-8-2 Mountain Locomotive #6064

Canada's population in 1901 was 5,371,000 and those 5+ million people were spread from the northeastern tip of Nova Scotia's Cape Breten Island to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Immigration caused a great increase in population over the following decade and, though Canada's existing railroads, the Intercolonial, National Transcontinental, Canadian Pacific, Canadian Northern, and Grand Trunk Pacific, were able to keep up with the population increase, the increase in population was insufficient to support the railroads. When World War I cut off the supply of funds from England, the railroads other than the Canadian Pacific found themselves in financial difficulty and were consolidated creating the Canadian National Railways. For new mainline power, following the monumental task of combining the wildly diverse power rosters of its predecessors, in 1923 the CN added 37 Class U-1-a 4-8-2 Mountains. Another 42 would follow.
