IHCM622 NYC Class L-2a 4-8-2 Mohawk Locomotive #2700
In 1916 the Central ordered and tested a single 69"-drivered 4-8-2 for freight service. It proved fast and economical. Schenectedy delivered 29 more within the year and, by the end of 1918, the road had 185 4-8-2s in freight service. The Central classed them L-1 and numbered them 2500-2684. As to the name, though, Mountain just wouldn't do. The NYC advertised itself as "the Water Level Route," implying that you could sleep comfortably as your train rolled along the banks of the Hudson and the Mohawk and the shore of Lake Erie-you wouldn't spend the night being tossed up and down mountains and flung around curves. Thus on the NYC 4-8-2s were Mohawks. NYC #2700 was the first of 200 Class L-2a Mohawks. (From "Guide to North American Steam Locomotives compiled by George H. Drury.)
