If you have spent any time on this website and actually read any of my product descriptions you may, perhaps, have appreciated my inclusion of each loco' historical background, something you won't find on any other HO Scale model railroad website. You may also have noticed my occasional ranting about the random and non-historically-accurate locomotive and cab numbering employed to some degree by Mantua and, most noticeably, by IHC. In this case however, IHC not only got it right but knocked it out of the park. Specifically, PRR Class K29 #3395 was the one-of-a-kind developmental prototype for the legendary PRR Class K-4 4-6-2's.
"In 1911 Alco delivered an experimental Pacific, class K29. with 27" x 28" cylinders and 80" drivers weighing 317,000 pounds. Pennsy combined cylinders, drivers and overall size of the K29, various features of the E6. and the boiler of the L1s Mikado to create a Pacific it classified K4s. It tested the new engine for three years, then between 1917 and 1924 built 324 of them at Altoona. Passenger traffic increased during the 1920s, and trains grew longer. Doubleheaded K-4s became standard practice. While other railroads turned to 4-8-2s and 4-6-4s, in 1927 and 1928 PRR ordered 100 more - still hand-fired and still doubleheaded."
