Truly "1" of a kind

"IC next pondered its rough-riding 2-8-4s and considered the requirements of its merchandise traffic-short, fast trains that carried less-than-carload freight between major cities on overnight schedules.Between Chicago and Memphis it had tried Mikados (too slow), Pacifics (not powerful enough), and Mountains (too much engine for the trains). The road needed something between a 4-6-2 and a 4-8-2 and decided to build a 4-6-4 for freight service. IC started with the boiler of 2-8-4 no.7038, used 73 1/2" drivers, and kept the Berkshire-size cylinders (27" x 30" or 27 1/2" x 30" - the authorities differ). The resulting homebuilt Hudson had a tractive effort of 64,360 pounds, almost as much as the 2-8-4 and far too much for its weight on drivers, making no.1 extremely slippery. IC unsuccessfully tried to solve the problem by shifting more weight to the drivers. In September 1937, no. 1 was tested extensively with the University of Illinois dynamometer car. No report was released, but it's safe to assume that the tests proved the design to be a failure. Number 1 was modified for passenger service in 1945 (primarily by reducing the cylinder diameter by 3") and renumbered 2499. The rest of the 2-8-4s were rebuilt in kind."
