IHC M1221 J.M. Bevinton L.S. & M.S.R.R 4-4-0 American Standard Locomotive HO Scale
The Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway is deservedly famous. It's tracks, laid by several of its predecessor lines, were the first rail connection between New York City and Chicago and, from 1869 to 1914, the L.S. & M.S. R.R played a vital role in American westward expansion and became the crucial link to the burgeoning industrial and agricultural heartland. For generations after the Civil War, the L.S & M.S. was the best way West. Owned almost entirely by Cornelius Vanderbilt when it was absorbed by his New York Central Railroad in 1914, in 1904 the L.S & M.S. tracks saw the first running of the 20th Century Limited, perhaps America's most famous passenger train.
J.M Bevinton, who's name resides on the cab of this beautiful HO Scale IHC M1221 L.S. & M.S.R.R 4-4-0 American Locomotive, is, apparently, not quite so famous. In fact, no amount of research on our part has yielded any mention of him, who he was or why he was honored with his name on the side of a grand locomotive. However, this being said, there is historical mention of a Wm. Bevington who belonged to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers in the late 1800's. While running a passenger route through Indiana and Ohio (which "could" have been with the L.S. & M.S. R.R) "Brother" Bevington noticed a small child ahead sitting between the tracks. He quickly put air on the train, reversed his engine, ran out on the pilot, jumped to the ground, got off the track with the child in his arms, and watched as his engine passed him by. There were several eyewitnesses to this heroic act. We can only guess if Wm. Bevington somehow over the years became incorrectly transposed to J.M Bevinton.
