Okay, if you're a stickler for historical accuracy, this train "likely" never existed. The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW) 4-6-6-4 #3801 was one of six Challenger locomotives (Class L-97) that the railroad leased from the Union Pacific during World War II. These locomotives, originally destined for the UP, were diverted to the D&RGW due to wartime production needs. Although intended for freight service, these Challengers WERE used by the UP in both passenger and freight operation it is unlikely that they found there way into D&RGW passenger service. Still, for fans of the D&RGW, it is not hard to imagine this magnificent train flying across the plains from Denver to Salt Lake City.
