AHM 5111B SP AC11 4-8-8-4 Cab Forward Mallet Locomotive #4272

The legendary Southern Pacific Cab Forward design was born of necessity. They not only supplied immense pulling power but provided engineers with superb visibility, and more importantly, fresh air to breath – through the many tunnels and snow-sheds of Donner Pass.

SP’s Cab-Forwards, in their glory days, were nearly synonymous with Donner Pass, powering everything from heavy tonnage to the urgent Pacific Fruit Express “fruit blocks” to the likes of the San Francisco Overland equally well. A big “AC” could, in fact, comfortably keep a 14-car heavyweight passenger consist on time over Donner. And Cab-Forwards were regular denizens of more than Donner Pass, working regularly on SP’s other rugged mountain properties including the Tehachapi Loop route.
