From its introduction in 1866 and well into the early twentieth century, the 2-8-0 design, like this hard working MRCHQ Collectible HO Scale Roundhouse 56510-271 SP 2-8-0 Consolidation Locomotive, was considered to be the ultimate heavy freight locomotive. The 2-8-0’s forte was starting and moving 'impressive loads at unimpressive speeds' and its versatility gave the type its longevity. The practical limit of the design was reached in 1915, when it was realized that there was no further development possible with a locomotive of this wheel arrangement.
Built from upgraded and re-manufactured vintage original Roundhouse tooling and decked out with modern can motors and razor sharp graphics, these late production Roundhouse steamers are some of the quietest and smoothest running locomotives ever produced.
