The White Pass & Yukon Railroad was built during the Klondike gold rush days to provide rail service to the Yukon. By 1900, 110 miles of narrow-gauge track were built from the port at Skagway, Alaska, over the spectacular White Pass, through British Columbia and on into Whitehorse in the Yukon.
Unlike many of its contemporaries, the WP&Y survived the 1930s depression, boomed during WW II building the Alaska Highway, added diesel power in the 1960s and pioneered multi-modal containerized shipping. In 1982, the major mines in the Yukon were closed and as a result the WP&Y ceased operations. In 1988 the WP&Y was reopened from Skagway, AK to Bennett in British Columbia as a tourist railroad.
The WP&Y offers scenic train excursions to cruise ship passengers and independent travelers out of Skagway, Alaska, a restored gold rush town and headquarters of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Between June and August, the WP&Y offers special steam excursions, using Steam Engine #73, between Skagway and Lake Bennett, British Columbia.
White Pass & Yukon #73 is an operating steam locomotive. It was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the White Pass and Yukon Route in May 1947. After retirement on June 30th, 1964, the locomotive was moved to Bennett, British Columbia, in 1968 for display. In 1979 the locomotive was moved again to Whitehorse, Yukon, this time to be restored. Restoration was completed in 1982, and the locomotive has been back in service since then. It is currently the larger of two operating steam locomotives on the line.
Stock IHCM9838 - WP&Y #73 - Our Modified IHCM9838
A signature feature of the real world WP&Y #73 2-8-2 Mikado is the distinctive handrail configuration on the boiler front. Our stock IHCM9838 didn't have it. The bell and headlamp locations were also incorrect, the Drive Wheels too large (sadly, can't be helped) and there was no boiler front Number Plate. All told, simply not good enough for our sensational MRRHQ Custom WP&Y Mixed Passenger/Freight Set. Many hours and lots of trial and error later, our new, much more prototypically correct, one-of-a-kind IHCM9838 WP&Y #73 was born. Ain't we swell and ain't she sweet?
